The Magic Kingdom in Florida is Going Solar Soon
It was definitely not in Walt Disney’s dream as the resort in central Florida is just a few months away from generating enough renewable solar energy to fully power two of its four parks. Disney will flip the switch on a sprawling 50-megawatt solar power facility composed of more than a half-million solar panels, just outside Disney’s Animal Kingdom before the end of 2018.
this is aimed at helping Disney achieve its larger plan to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions 50 percent worldwide by 2020 compared to 2012. The company has partnered with Reedy Creek Improvement District and solar project developer Origis Energy USA to execute this much-awaited power project. Bob Chapek, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, said, “At our sites around the world, we’re investing in hidden magic to continually reduce our environmental footprint,”
spread along a 270-acre designated renewable energy area, the soon-to-open Disney World solar facility will produce enough energy to supply 10,000 homes annually and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 57,000 tons per year. the company said that this is annual equivalent of removing roughly 9,300 automobiles from the roads. The energy will go into the local power grid and not actually go to Disney’s theme parks. With this proposed energy site, it can be said that Disney is emerging as a renewable energy force.
Other than Florida, the company has also spread its solar and renewable efforts to cities including Tokyo, Paris, and Shanghai. when they head out to sea in 2021, 2022, and 2023, Disney also is building three new cruise ships that will run on clean-burning liquefied natural gas. With the help of Duke Energy, Disney has opened a solar facility in 2016 that famously shaped like Mickey Mouse’s head. With the 48,000 solar panels, the five-megawatt solar facility was made on 22 acres near Epcot.
The Chief Executive of the American Council on Renewable Energy, Gregory Wetstone congratulated Disney’s move towards renewable energy and said, “What Disney is doing is an important part of the trend that’s changing the nation’s grid.”
Could Walt Disney have ever imagined all of this renewable energy in his parks?
