US Air Force to Launch New Solar Facility at Holloman
The U.S. Air Force, alongside El Paso Electric, celebrated the completion and commercial operation of the Holloman Atlas Solar Array at a ribbon cutting ceremony recently. spans over 42-acres and is dedicated to serve the Holloman Air Force Base electric load in Otero County, New Mexico, this is the first one of EPE-owned and operated solar facility built to serve a military installation in US.
Mary Kipp, President and CEO of the El Paso Electric said that the completion of the Holloman Atlas Solar Array marks a milestone in the renewable energy goals and embodies company’s mission to provide safe, clean, and sustainable sources of energy. Kipp said, “Today, we want to celebrate our inaugural collaboration with the U.S. Air Force and look forward to continuing serving our community through these kinds of partnerships.”
An agreement was signed earlier by the Holloman Air Force Base and EPE for the development of the solar facility in 2016 and the construction began in 2017. representatives and executives from the Holloman Air Force Base and El Paso Electric attended the inaugural ceremony and promised to enhance their support to each other.
The 49th Wing Civil Engineer Squadron, Commander Lt. Col. Joel Purcell in his speech said that from the beginning, the US air force was confident in this new cooperation with El Paso Electric and therefore, they came together to bring this project to fruition. “The addition of this clean energy resource will enhance the resiliency and ability to better equip our installation while at the same time save on taxpayer costs. In addition to enhancing our installation, we are reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. By decreasing this dependence, we are strengthening and increasing our national security,” Purcell expressed.
Made up of almost 56,000 thin-film modules that will generate enough electricity to power more than 1,700 homes annually, this newest solar facility of EPF will prevent annual CO2 emissions by over 9,000 U.S. tons. This is equivalent to removing 2,000 cars from the road, and can save approximately nine million gallons of water!
One of the leading global high-tech engineering companies who also constructed EPE’s community solar facility in East El Paso, Texas, Exyte Energy, Inc, created over 90 jobs through the duration of the development.
Jim Brown, Exyte Energy, Inc. President termed the Holloman Atlas Solar Array a landmark project for the company and said that this initiative has helped the company to work with EPE to build its first facility to serve a military installation, as well as expand its clean energy footprint for the region.
A total of 115 MWs power will increase in EPE’s total renewable energy portfolio in addition of the Holloman Atlas Solar Array.
