How Solar Panels Produce Electricity?

In the recent past, solar energy has gained momentum around the world as most countries have already shifted their focus from mainstream energy production to the renewable one. In USA, homeowners are starting to look at solar as a viable alternative energy solution as the cost of solar energy has plummeted alongside major improvements in technical efficiencies and manufacturing quality. The most common and important element to produce electricity through solar is nothing but a solar panel. However, we all may have found many such panels installed in our home or offices, however, we are not aware of how these panels work.
Using photovoltaic cells, solar panels produce electricity. These cells are sandwiched between semi-conducting materials, such as silicon but it can also be glass or polymer resin with different electronic properties to create an electric field. The semiconducting materials energize, when photons or sunlight hit the panels. This photoelectric effect originally creates the current needed electricity.
The general photovoltaic process, as described above, works through the below steps:
  • The silicon photovoltaic solar cell absorbs solar radiation completely
  • Electrons begin to move when the sun’s rays interact with the silicon cell
  • Moving electrons creates a flow of electric current, captured by nodes and wiring in the panel
  • Wires feed this direct current or DC electricity to a solar inverter to be converted to alternating current or AC electricity

  • How Solar panels Installed in your Home works?
  • Solar panels work by absorbing sunlight with photovoltaic cells, generating direct current (DC) energy and then converting it to usable alternating current (AC) energy with the help of inverter technology.  The main steps of the home’s electrical panel are described below:
    • Panels absorb the Sun’s energy and convert to DC electricity
    • DC electricity is converted to the AC electricity by the solar inverter
    • Powering the electronic devices ensures electricity flow
    • Now, the excess electricity produced by solar panels is fed to the electric grid
