Maryland Shopping Mall Solar System Becomes Operational

If recent reports are to be believed, the solar installation in US will stay at the same level in 2018 as last year due to weakness in several major residential markets. Slowdown in big projects after a rush to beat a tax credit deadline is also responsible for this situation. However, amidst this turmoil, a sign of relief has been announced by the solar developer Safari Energy. The company declared that the 2.056 MW solar rooftop system at Francis Scott Key Mall in Maryland has started functioning.
Currently, the project is providing clean energy for the Class A shopping destination, which is originally owned by real estate investment trust PREIT (Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust). Located within an hour of Washington, D.C., and the state’s largest city Baltimore, this shopping mall project is Safari Energy’s eighth development in the state, bringing the total capacity of the company’s commercial rooftop solar systems in Maryland to nearly 10 MW.
This is the fifth collaboration between PREIT and the Safari Energy in the country. Both the companies joined hands on their first rooftop solar project at Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey and since then they have made a long way. Appreciating the joint efforts, CEO of PREIT Joseph F. Coradino said, “We are pleased to continue building on this partnership with five installations now complete. Safari Energy has helped us realize the significant economic value and environmental benefits from previously unused roof space from Massachusetts to Maryland, enhancing our sustainability efforts.”
Safari Energy conducted site analysis; engineering design; financial, tax and legal structuring; incentive capture; permitting; construction management; and interconnection approval, being the developer of the project. with Safari Energy providing the site with operations and maintenance, the project has now moved into the asset management phase.
The company is similarly providing ongoing O&M services in Maryland for systems installed at Mondawmin Mall in Baltimore and Federal Plaza in Bethesda.
Safari Energy CEO Matt Rudey said that the company is proud to continue expanding their portfolio of projects with PREIT and to support the growth of renewable energy in Maryland. “We look forward to completing more commercial solar projects in the state as we help to advance a cleaner energy future,” commented the CEO.
